to a variable there is an invisible multiplication sign. So you could rewrite the problem as follows:

So now you can multiply what are the same. You can multiply the coefficients together and the x variables together as follows:
2 × 6 = 12
x × x = x^{2}
Then you put the answers together and make the multiplication sign invisible again to get the following answer:
2x × 6x = 12x^{2}
