3x × 3x = ?
What is 3x times 3x?

Here we will do more than give you the solution to 3x × 3x. We will also explain and teach you how we came up with the answer, so you can understand it and solve similar problems in the future without help.

In this problem, 3 and 3 are the coefficients and two Xs are the variables. When a coefficient is next to a variable there is an invisible multiplication sign. So you could rewrite the problem as follows:

3 × x × 3 × x =

So now you can multiply what are the same. You can multiply the coefficients together and the x variables together as follows:

3 × 3 = 9

x × x = x2

Then you put the answers together and make the multiplication sign invisible again to get the following answer:

3x × 3x = 9x2

Do you think you can do it on your own now? If so, try the next problem on our list: What is 3x times 4x

from Research Maniacs:

If you multiply two same variables with exponents, you simply keep the variable and add the exponents. Also x with no exponent is the same as x1.

Here are some problems with answers that you should know based on what you learned on this page:

3x × 3x2 = 9x3

3x × 3x3 = 9x4

3x × 3x4 = 9x5

3x2 × 3x = 9x3

3x2 × 3x2 = 9x4

3x2 × 3x3 = 9x5
