Can Hippos Swim?

Can Hippos Swim? Find out below.

Hippos live in rivers and lakes and love the water. Furthermore, Hippopotamus means river-horse and they spend most of their time in and around the water. So naturally, you would assume they could swim. Yet, you are reading this to find out if hippos can swim, huh?

The answer to: "Can Hippos Swim?" is actually no. Hippos cannot swim. Their large bodies and relatively small legs make it hard to swim. Instead they kind of hop along the lake bottom, and make sure they don't go into water that is too deep.

PS. Having said that, we have seen very young hippos sort of swim underwater at the zoo. Anyway, they grow up to become non-swimmers :)
