What is a CSV file?

CSV

So what is a csv file, you ask? CSV stands for comma-separated values and is, very simply, a text document where data is separated with commas, with one set of data on each line. The file extension for CSV files is cvs. For example, a file name could be ResearchManiacs.csv.

We here at Research Maniacs find csv files very useful, because if you use one program to save a csv file, it can be opened easily in many other programs, This makes it very easy to move data between programs and even between computers with different operating systems.

You can, for example, create a csv file using Excel on a Windows computer and then open it in Numbers on a Mac. Csv files can also be opened in text programs, such as Notepad and TextEdit.

As we mentioned above, csv files can be created with spreadsheet programs, such as Numbers and Excel. A csv file can also be created from a text file. It is very easy to convert a text file, because csv is also a "text file" so there is no conversion going on. All you have to do is rename the file from example.txt to example.csv.
