What is Mexican rice?

I love all kinds of Mexican food. When I go out to eat in a Mexican restaurant, I order something different each time, such as fajitas, tacos, burritos, or chimichangas. However, regardless of what I order, I always make sure that I get a side of Mexican rice.

So what is Mexican rice? First of all, they don't call it Mexican rice in Mexico. Rice in Mexico is called arroz. Furthermore, Mexican rice is also sometimes called Spanish rice, but they don't call it that in Spain. The term Mexican Rice (or Spanish Rice) is actually created by Americans for Mexican restaurants in America.

To make Mexican rice, you basically sauté rice in a skillet until the rice turns brown, then you mix in chicken or beef broth with chopped up tomatoes, garlic, and onions. It is that easy! There are many variations of Mexican rice recipes out there. Try different ones until you find your favorite.
