What year did the California Gold Rush start?

Question: What year did the California Gold Rush start?

The California Gold Rush started in 1848 when James Marshall discovered a little nugget of gold in the American River in California.

Thousands of men from the neighboring states moved to California to find gold. Some found gold and even fewer found wives - because of the male gold rush immigration to California, less than 1 in 10 people living in California were women by 1850.
