What year was the first space shuttle launched?

Question: What year was the first space shuttle launched?

The space shuttle Columbia was the first shuttle to be launched into space. It was scheduled to launch in 1979, but the launch did not happen because of problems. However, it did successfully launch on April 12, 1981 and returned safely two days later.

Sadly, the horrible fate of the Columbia twelve years after its initial launch is etched in our memories. Space shuttle Columbia broke up during re-entry as it returned to Earth on Feb 1, 2003, killing all seven astronauts on board: Rick D. Husband, William C. McCool, Michael P. Anderson, David M. Brown, Kalpana Chawla, Laurel Blair Salton Clark, and Ilan Ramon.
