Amish Taxes
Why do Amish not pay taxes? Actually, the Amish do pay most taxes! When the Amish go to the store, they have to pay sales tax. If they own property, the Amish have to pay property tax. And if they have income, they must pay the same federal and state taxes as the rest of us.
However, there are two taxes the Amish do not pay. The Amish do not take advantage of Social Security benefits nor do they use Medicare. Thus, per law of 1961, the Amish and other religious groups that do not believe in insurance can be excluded from having to pay Social Security and Medicare tax.
The Amish community takes care of their own elderly and they are self-insured through their church.
