When you ask, "What is the absolute value of -1?" you are asking for the answer to the following problem:
|-1| = ?
The absolute value of -1 is the distance between -1 and 0 on a number line. See illustration below where -x is -1:

Since the distance between -1 and 0 on a number line is 1, we get the answer as follows:
|-1| = 1
Note that the absolute value of -1 can also be written as abs(-1) which may be useful to know if you have a good calculator.
