When you ask, "What is the absolute value of -7?" you are asking for the answer to the following problem:
|-7| = ?
The absolute value of -7 is the distance between -7 and 0 on a number line. See illustration below where -x is -7:
Since the distance between -7 and 0 on a number line is 7, we get the answer as follows:
|-7| = 7
Note that the absolute value of -7 can also be written as abs(-7) which may be useful to know if you have a good calculator.
