When you ask, "What is the absolute value of 1000?" you are asking for the answer to the following problem:
|1000| = ?
The absolute value of 1000 is the distance between 1000 and 0 on a number line. See illustration below where x is 1000:
Since the distance between 1000 and 0 on a number line is 1000, we get the answer as follows:
|1000| = 1000
Note that the absolute value of 1000 can also be written as abs(1000) which may be useful to know if you have a good calculator.
