When you ask about a cholesterol level of 279 we assume you are referring to the "bad" LDL (Low Density Lipoprotein) Cholesterol that accumulates in the walls of the arteries and can cause all kinds of bad things, such as heart attack and stroke.
LDL Cholesterol Level
According to the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, LDL Cholesterol levels fall into the following categories, illustrated by the table below, where mg/dL means milligrams per deciliter of blood.
Less than 100 mg/dL = Optimal
100-129 mg/dL = Near/Above Optimal
130-159 mg/dL = Borderline High
160-189 mg/dL = High
190 mg/dL and above = Very High
Using the data above, you can see that a 279 LDL Cholesterol level falls into the Very High category.
HDL Cholesterol Level
There is also something called HDL (High Density Lipoprotein) Cholesterol, which is often referred to as good cholesterol. The higher the HDL Cholesterol the better. HDL Cholesterol levels of 60 mg/dL or more are considered good. HDL Cholesterol levels of less than 40 mg/dL are considered very bad.
Total Cholesterol Level
Furthermore, there is a Total Cholesterol Level that has three different categories as outlined below:
Less than 200 mg/dL = Desirable
200-239 mg/dL = Borderline High
240 mg/dL and above = High
Be aware that the Total Cholesterol result by itself may not be enough information for knowing if you have healthy cholesterol levels, because it adds up HDL, LDL, and VLDL. You could, for example, have super low HDL and high LDL and still fall in the "Desirable" Total Cholesterol category.
Note that you need some cholesterol, because it is important fat that the cells in your body need. However, too much is bad. HDL Cholesterol is considered good, because it removes the bad LDL Cholesterol.
