The Great Sphinx in Egypt

Pictures and information about The Great Sphinx in Egypt

This photo above shows a number of the ruins at Giza. To the left is the Valley Temple with a causeway stretching to the Pyramid of Khafre. The Great Sphinx lies before the Pyramid and the remains of the Temple of the Sphinx lie in front of the sphinx itself.

Above picture: The Great Sphinx, a reclining lion with a human head, is the oldest known monumental sculpture in the world. It is believed to have been carved about 2500 B.C. and most probably depicts the Pharaoh Khafre. The nose of the sphinx has eroded over time.

Above picture: The immensity of the Sphinx becomes apparent when it is compared to a camel party riding along one of its paws.
