How many spaces after a period?
Question: How many spaces after a period?
If you were educated before word processors and computers, you were
probably taught that you should have two spaces after a period.
Even younger people that are educated by old-school teachers are
still being taught that they should put two spaces after a period.
We have researched newer grammar books and these days the rule for the
correct number of spaces to put after a period is one.
It is true that it used to be two spaces after a period. Why did
it change from two spaces to one space after a period you may ask?
In the "old days" of typewriters, each letter you wrote took
the same amount of space on the paper (fixed-font size).
For example, a 'w' took the same amount of space as a period. Thus,
a period at the end of a sentence, followed by a space, then by another
letter, made it look like the period was in the middle of a word.
Adding second space, made it easier to read, because it clearly
separated the sentences. These days, with better fonts, it is not
necessary to compensate for fixed font size so ONE space is
fine.
