Who first used chopsticks?
Question: Who first used chopsticks?
Although Research Maniacs' headquarters is in the US,
we sometimes have our lunch meetings in Chinese or
Japanese restaurants. When eating there, we usually
follow the restaurant's custom and eat with chopsticks.
In addition to China and Japan, countries like Korea
and Vietnam also eat with chopsticks. But do you
know who first used chopsticks?
Chopsticks were first used as eating utensils by the
Han Dynasty in China. The Han Dynasty ruled 200 years
before and after Year 0. Thus, chopsticks are
more than 2000 years old. It is also believed that
chopsticks were used before that for cooking purposes.
Although the chopsticks we get at our local Chinese
restaurant are made of wood, in China, chopsticks are
usually made out of bamboo.
Comments from Research Maniacs visitors:
I always eat with chopsticks when I go to restaurants
that offer them. It is a fun way of eating. I actually
heard that they are fazing out using wood to make
disposable chopsticks in Japan and China to save
trees. Now they use re-usable plastic chopsticks
instead.

From personal experience, I have found that you can
lose weight with chopsticks. When eating with chopsticks,
you eat slower, you chew your food, your stomach digests the
smaller chewed food better, and you get full faster. Give
it a try!

The Chinese may have been the first to use chopsticks, but
did you know that some dude here in San Francisco invented
and served the Fortune Cookie at his restaurant?
