Did you know that the Hawthorne Bridge was designed by John Wadell who invented the vertical lift bridge?

It was built in 1910 to replace the Madison Bridge that was destroyed by fire.

Now it is the oldest vertical lift bridge that is still being used in the United States. It is also the oldest highway bridge in Oregon.

The Hawthorne Bridge is the busiest bicycle bridge in Oregon and over 4,800 bicycles cross it every day. It crosses the Willamette River.

When the river is low, the bridge is 49 feet above the water. This bridge is a very important bridge to have in Portland.
