Mary Jo Kopechne was a teacher, secretary and political specialist when she died prematurely at age 28.
She attended a party in Massachusetts when Edward M. Kennedy (aka Ted Kennedy) offered her a ride to
the ferry. She did not tell her close friends she was leaving the party and she left her purse and keys
at the party.
Kennedy drove off a bridge that was not en route to the ferry and survived, but Mary was left dead in
the water. Kennedy did not report the accident until after the authorities found the body the next day.
Kennedy received a two-months suspended sentence and tried to become President in 1980, but could
not beat Carter for the nomination! Mary died in 1969.
