Amish Clothing

As you have seen from pictures and maybe in person driving down the country roads of Lancaster, PA, the Amish wear very plain, yet easily noticeable clothing. Their goal is to make their clothing not stick out or attract attention. Ironically, it seems like the plain "Amish uniform" actually sticks out more than the rest of the general "colorful" population in these modern times.

Women wear long dresses in solid muted colors. They also wear white aprons at home and black or purple aprons in church. To top it off, women wear bonnets on their heads.

Men wear blue denim trousers for working, and black or dark trousers otherwise. They also wear a dark vest. In the summer the men wear straw hats, and in the winter they wear black felt hats.

Children wear similar clothing, but sometimes a little more colorful than their parents and elders.

Other interesting things about the clothing include that they use suspenders instead of belts. Amish do not use zippers, Velcro or even buttons. Instead, they use pins.

The colors and style of their clothing also indicates their status or age in the Amish society. For example, women wear white aprons and bonnets in church if un-married, and darker colors if married. Children under nine can wear colorful bonnets.

The Amish clothing may look dull and plain, but as you can see, a lot of rules and thought are involved as they get dressed in the morning.
