When you ask, "What is the absolute value of -2?" you are asking for the answer to the following problem:
|-2| = ?
The absolute value of -2 is the distance between -2 and 0 on a number line. See illustration below where -x is -2:
Since the distance between -2 and 0 on a number line is 2, we get the answer as follows:
|-2| = 2
Note that the absolute value of -2 can also be written as abs(-2) which may be useful to know if you have a good calculator.
