When you ask, "What is the absolute value of -3?" you are asking for the answer to the following problem:
|-3| = ?
The absolute value of -3 is the distance between -3 and 0 on a number line. See illustration below where -x is -3:

Since the distance between -3 and 0 on a number line is 3, we get the answer as follows:
|-3| = 3
Note that the absolute value of -3 can also be written as abs(-3) which may be useful to know if you have a good calculator.
