Is Popcorn healthy?
Popcorn Question: Is Popcorn healthy?
Air popped popcorn with nothing added is a good source of fiber. It is a
vegetable and it has some nutritional value, although not as much
as many other vegetables. Furthermore, popcorn is low in calories and low
in fat, which makes it an ideal snack. All sounds good so far, doesn't it?
Anyway, ready on before scarfing down a bucket of popcorn.
Most people do not just eat plain air popped popcorn. Instead, they eat
it cooked in oil or butter, flavored with butter and other products and
then topped off with tons of salt. Thus, most popcorn eaten is full of
fat, calories, and sodium. All this does not make up for the little
nutritional value it has. You probably want to eat popcorn in small portions
and stay completely away from the popcorn fat calorie-fest you can find
in the move theaters.
Also note that you should not serve popcorn to young kids, because it can
be a choking hazard. Furthermore, you may want to stay away from microwave
popcorn as it is often made with diacetyl, which can be hazardous to
your health.
